A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers this week. The scripture is from our Sunday Service Bulletin. We conclude our sermon series on receiving something special or profound. Today’s topic is “The Memory”.

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
Devotion: The Memory
It is quite appropriate to talk about memories on Memorial Day. Let us give thanks for those who sacrificed their lives that we might live in freedom in the US. The text for today has Jesus being blotted out of the memories of the two disciples to the point that they do not recognize who He is as they all walk to Emmaus. Finally, in verse 31 they do recognize who He is but He quickly vanishes. Memories can sometimes play a trick on us, for instance if you see a person out of context such as person that you transact business with in a setting other than normal you maybe can’t figure out who they are. Let us say you run into a cashier from your grocery store at a sporting event. You know that you know that person you just can’t figure out who it is at first. Another memory trick that that’s played on you is sharing ancient memories with old friends and it turns out that your memories of events do not match your friends’ and you were all there seeing the same thing. Another memory trick is hurtful: when an awful blast from the past, some embarrassing event, floats up in your thoughts. Of course that is Satan trying to make you feel bad, you don’t need to linger on that one, God loves you no matter what mistakes you make. Ask God to order Satan to get that unneeded flashback out of your head. Friends, there is One who sacrificed His life so that we could be forgiven and live a Christian life in freedom. When we meet Him face to face, all those wonderful memories will be reviewed and the bad ones will be explained and wiped off our slate. I pray that you will have a peaceful and memorable Memorial Day!
