• Devotion - 18 March - Lead us not into Temptation

A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers this week. The scripture is from our Sunday Service Bulletin for today.  Today we continue a Lenten sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer. A portion of the discussion comes from Luther’s Small catechism, pp 19.
    Gospel Reading- Matthew 4:1-11 [ESV]
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
    and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him
Devotion: “P” is for Prayer- Lead us not Into Temptation
When we pray this portion of the Lord’s prayer [“the sixth petition”]: “Lead us not into temptation” we might be incorrectly thinking that we’re asking the Lord not to tempt us. The New Testament says the Lord will not tempt us [James 1:13-14 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.] Indeed, our text today shows Jesus defeating Satan’s attempt to tempt Him. So when we pray the sixth petition, we ask God to guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair and other great shame and vice. We pray that we will overcome these things.
We pray: “Lord, help us resist the temptations of the world. Amen”
